Kenya sits almost on the equator, so temperatures stay fairly consistent year-round — what actually changes month to month is rainfall and wildlife movement, especially the Great Migration. Here’s what to expect, month by month.

Month-by-Month Breakdown
January–February
Dry, warm, and sunny — a great time to visit. Wildebeest calving season happens in the southern plains, drawing predators. Beach weather on the coast is excellent too.
March–May
The long rains arrive, peaking in April. Landscapes turn green and dramatic, and prices drop significantly. Some remote camps close for maintenance. Good for budget travelers who don’t mind rain showers.
June
Transitional month — rains ease off, migration herds begin moving north toward the Mara. A great shoulder-season pick.
July–September
Peak dry season and peak safari season. This is when the Great Migration river crossings happen in the Maasai Mara — the single most famous wildlife spectacle in Kenya. Expect higher prices and busier camps.
October
Still dry, migration herds begin moving back south. Slightly quieter than peak months with similar wildlife viewing.
November
The “short rains” arrive — brief afternoon showers, not usually disruptive. Landscapes green up again, and prices ease slightly.
December
Dry spells return around mid-month, and the festive season brings a price spike, especially for beach resorts on the coast. Good wildlife viewing continues.
Weather on the Coast vs. the Highlands
Kenya’s coast (Mombasa, Diani, Watamu) runs hot and humid year-round, with the coolest, driest window from June to October. Nairobi and the highlands are cooler and can get chilly at night, especially June–August.
