Kenya has more than 20 national parks and reserves, but three consistently top first-timers’ shortlists. Each offers a very different experience — here’s how to choose.
Masai Mara National Reserve
Best for: Big cats, the Great Migration, classic “postcard” safari scenery
The Mara is Kenya’s most famous reserve, bordering Tanzania’s Serengeti. It has the highest concentration of predators in the country and hosts the wildebeest river crossings each year (roughly July–October). The trade-off is cost and crowds — conservancy and park fees are the highest in Kenya, and popular viewing spots can get busy with vehicles during peak migration weeks.
- Distance from Nairobi: ~270 km (about 5–6 hours by road, or a 45-minute flight)
- Ideal trip length: 3–4 nights
- Price tier: Mid-range to luxury
Amboseli National Park
Best for: Elephants and Kilimanjaro views
Amboseli is famous for its large elephant herds and unbeatable backdrop — Mount Kilimanjaro looms just across the Tanzanian border, and clear-morning photos here are iconic. The park is smaller and easier to cover in a shorter visit than the Mara.

- Ideal trip length: 2–3 nights
- Price tier: Budget to mid-range, with some luxury lodges
Tsavo (East & West)
Best for: Value, space, and diverse landscapes
Tsavo is Kenya’s largest protected area, split into Tsavo East and Tsavo West. It’s far less crowded than the Mara or Amboseli, with dramatic red-soil elephants, volcanic hills, and lava flows in Tsavo West. It’s also the most budget-friendly of the three, with lower park fees and often better value lodges.

Can You Visit More Than One?
Yes — many itineraries combine two parks, most commonly Amboseli or Tsavo with the Mara, or Amboseli with a coastal beach extension since it sits on the route toward Mombasa. If you’re short on time, picking one park and going deeper (more game drives, more days) usually beats rushing between two.
